Coastal Communities in Ruins
Piles of household furniture, appliances, and personal effects line the coast, washed out of homes by the storm surge. For many families along the shoreline, the recovery process involves rebuilding their lives from the ground up.
Mass Structural Damage
A wooden home stands surrounded by fallen trees and scattered vegetation. High winds from Hurricane Melissa have compromised the structural integrity of countless homes in the western region, leaving many structures uninhabitable.
Severe Flooding and Debris in Wake of Hurricane Melissa
Thick mud and debris clog main thoroughfares, complicating relief efforts. Emergency and utility vehicles are currently navigating treacherous conditions to reach isolated communities cut off by the storm’s aftermath.
Surviving the Destruction
Residents in a rural community take a moment to rest amidst the cleanup efforts. The storm has left many elderly and vulnerable citizens in the southern parishes facing severe property damage and a lack of essential services.
