China Condemns U.S. Peru Mega Port Rumors
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian declared Beijing "firmly opposes and expresses strong dissatisfaction" with the US for "blatant spreading of rumors and smearing of Chancay Port," state-run media reported.
The diplomatic clash erupted after the US State Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs raised alarm Wednesday over Peru's capacity to maintain oversight of Chancay—among the nation's most significant ports—alleging Chinese operators wielded excessive control through predatory investment tactics.
"We support Peru's sovereign right to oversee critical infrastructure in its own territory. Let this be a cautionary tale for the region and the world: cheap Chinese money costs sovereignty," said the State Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs on US social media company X on Wednesday.
The $1.3 billion mega-port complex in Chancay city was ceremonially opened by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2024 during his state visit to the Latin American nation, marking a significant expansion of Beijing's infrastructure footprint across the region.
The dispute highlights mounting US-China tensions over economic influence in Latin America, where Washington increasingly views Chinese-financed infrastructure ventures as strategic threats to hemispheric sovereignty and American geopolitical interests.
